Keylong serves as a gateway to the stark beauty of the Lahaul and Spiti region.
Atal Tunnel & Solang Valley - The 9km-long Atal Tunnel is an engineering landmark providing year-round access to Lahaul. Driving through it is an experience, as the landscape changes dramatically from the green Kullu side to the arid Lahaul side. Near the tunnel's south portal is Solang Valley, a hub for adventure sports.
Spiti Valley Loop - Keylong is a common first stop for travellers embarking on the Spiti circuit from Manali. The road from here leads towards Kaza, passing high-altitude passes and remote monasteries like Ki and Kibber. This route is typically open only from June to October. A permit is required for Indian nationals to complete the loop via Kinnaur, checked at Sumdo.
Manali Town - The bustling hub of Manali is about two hours away via the Atal Tunnel. Here you can visit the ancient Hadimba Devi temple, explore the cafes of Old Manali, or take a dip in the Vashisht hot springs.
By Air - The nearest airport is Bhuntar (KUU) in Kullu, about a 3-4 hour drive away. For more reliable, all-weather flights, Chandigarh (IXC) is the best option, though it is a much longer drive (around 10-12 hours) to Keylong.
By Rail - The closest major railhead is Chandigarh. From there, you can hire a taxi or take a bus to Manali and then onward to Keylong. The scenic UNESCO toy train runs from Kalka to Shimla, but this is an indirect route for reaching the Lahaul valley.
By Road - Keylong is on the Manali-Leh highway (NH-3). Most travellers drive from Manali, a journey of about 2-3 hours through the Atal Tunnel. The town is well-connected by state-run buses from Manali and other parts of Himachal. The home is just 50 metres from the Keylong bus stand.
The best time to visit Keylong is from March to June, when the snow melts and summer arrives in the valley. The post-monsoon months of September to November offer clear blue skies and crisp mountain air. The monsoon (July-August) is best avoided due to the risk of landslides on the approach roads like NH-3 and NH-21. Winter (December-February) brings heavy snow, but the Atal Tunnel keeps Keylong accessible for those seeking a true Himalayan winter.
