The drive through the Atal Tunnel is a passage. You leave the green of the Kullu valley and emerge into the stark, high-altitude light of Lahaul. This home is one of the first things you see, a simple stone-clad building standing against a wall of snow peaks. The air is thin and clean. The home has five bedrooms, with a total of eight beds, making space for groups of up to ten people. The rooms are simple and warm, with wood floors and large windows that let the mountain views in. There is parking available on the premises. The kitchen is a focus here. Guests often talk about the food, which is cooked by the staff and feels like a meal at home. The host, Mohit, and his team are known for being helpful and kind. The home is a good starting point for exploring the Lahaul valley. The Atal Tunnel, an engineering feat at over 9 kilometres long, is the new gateway to the region and a destination in itself. It keeps the valley connected to Manali year-round.

On the other side of the tunnel lies the Solang Valley, known for its adventure sports. A day trip back towards Manali can take you to the Hadimba Devi temple, a 16th-century wooden temple in a cedar forest, or the hot springs at Vashisht.

For those heading deeper into the Himalayas, Lahaul is the entry point for the Spiti valley loop. The road from here continues towards Kaza, the Ki monastery, and some of the highest villages in the world. This route is typically open only from June to October.

Getting there.

By Air: The nearest airport is Bhuntar Airport (KUU) in Kullu, which serves the Manali region. From the airport, it is a road journey of about 2-3 hours to Manali, followed by another 1-2 hours to cross the Atal Tunnel into Lahaul. The more reliable, all-weather airport is Chandigarh (IXC), which is a much longer drive (8-10 hours to Manali).

By Rail: The nearest major railhead is in Chandigarh. From there, you can hire a taxi or take a bus to Manali. The scenic Kalka-Shimla toy train is another option for reaching Shimla, but Manali and Lahaul are still a long road journey away.

By Road: Manali is the main road hub for reaching Lahaul. The journey from Manali is through the Atal Tunnel. The road is generally well-maintained but subject to weather conditions, especially in winter.

Seasons

Best time to visit.

The best time to visit Lahaul is during the summer months, from March to June, when the snow has melted and the weather is pleasant. Another clear window is from September to November, after the monsoon, when the skies are clear and the views are sharp.

The monsoon season, in July and August, can cause landslides on the highway leading to Manali, making travel difficult. Winter, from December to February, brings heavy snowfall to the Lahaul valley. While the Atal Tunnel remains open, local roads in the valley can be blocked, and temperatures drop far below freezing.
