Cherrapunji (Sohra) is a hub for exploring the region's natural wonders. The living root bridges are a worth seeing. The most famous, the Nongriat double-decker bridge, is a challenging but rewarding trek down 3,500 steps into the valley.
Closer to the home are the Mawsmai and Krem Phyllut caves, a network of limestone caves that you can explore. They are well-lit and give a glimpse into the world beneath the hills.
India's tallest plunge waterfall, Nohkalikai Falls (340m), is a short drive away. The viewpoint offers a dramatic sight, especially during the monsoon when the water is at its most powerful.
Drive towards the Bangladesh border to find the Umngot river at Dawki. Between January and March, the water is so clear it looks like boats are floating in mid-air.
Nearby Mawlynnong is famous for being 'Asia's cleanest village'. A short walk from the village leads to the Riwai sky walk, a bamboo bridge offering views over the plains of Bangladesh.
The standard arrival point for Meghalaya is Guwahati, which has the nearest major airport and railhead.
The best time to visit the Khasi Hills is from October to April, when the skies are clear and the weather is pleasant. This is the ideal season for trekking and caving.
The monsoon, from June to September, is a different experience altogether. The region receives over 10,000mm of rain, turning the landscape a brilliant, intense green. Waterfalls are at their peak, but be prepared for road closures and some attractions like caves being shut.
