The home is a starting point for some of Meghalaya’s most well-known sights. The famous double-decker living root bridge at Nongriat is a challenging but rewarding trek, involving a descent of over 3,500 steps into the valley.
Closer to the home, in the Cherrapunji (Sohra) area, are the Mawsmai and Krem Phyllut caves. These limestone caves offer a glimpse into the region's unique geology. Mawsmai is lit and more accessible, while others require a bit more adventure.
A drive away is the Umngot river at Dawki, on the border with Bangladesh. Between January and March, the water runs so clear it looks like boats are floating on air.
Mawlynnong, often called Asia's cleanest village, is another popular trip. You can walk through its tidy lanes and climb the Riwai sky walk, a bamboo bridge offering views over the plains.
And of course, there are the waterfalls. Nohkalikai, India's tallest plunge waterfall at 340 metres, is a short drive away. Its viewpoint offers a direct, powerful sight, especially just after the monsoon.
The standard arrival point is Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport (GAU) in Guwahati, Assam, which is about 100km and a 3-hour drive from Shillong. Shillong also has a smaller airport at Umroi (SHL), 30km away, with limited flights. The nearest major railhead is also in Guwahati. From Shillong, Cherrapunji is a 53km drive, which takes about two hours on a winding but scenic road. Taxis are readily available from both Guwahati and Shillong.
The best time to visit the Khasi & Jaintia Hills is from October to April, when the skies are clearer and the weather is pleasant. This is the ideal season for trekking and caving. The monsoon, from June to September, is an experience in itself. The region receives over 10,000mm of rain, turning the landscape an intense, vivid green. Waterfalls are at their most powerful, though some caves and trails may close.
