“We had a delightful stay at this resort, with lovely cottages beautifully nestled in nature. The peaceful surroundings made it a perfect escape from the everyday hustle. The service was exceptional—staff were warm, attentive, and always ready to help, making our experience even more memorable.”
The Khasi Hills are a landscape of extremes. The best way to explore is to hire a local car and driver for the day, who can navigate the winding roads.
Just a short drive away is the trail to the Nongriat double-decker living root bridge. It’s a famous sight, but reaching it is a serious commitment, a descent and ascent of over 3,500 stone steps. Start early and carry water.
For a less strenuous day, explore the region's caves. Mawsmai and Krem Phyllut are two of the most accessible systems near Cherrapunji, with lit pathways that take you through impressive stalactite and stalagmite formations.
An hour's drive brings you to Nohkalikai Falls, India's tallest plunge waterfall at 340 metres. The viewpoint gives you a direct, staggering look at the cascade.
Further afield, about a 2.5-hour drive, is the border town of Dawki. Here, the Umngot river runs famously clear, especially from January to March, making boats look like they’re floating on air. A bit beyond is Mawlynnong, often called Asia's cleanest village, with its own smaller root bridge and a bamboo sky walk offering views over the plains of Bangladesh.
By air: The nearest major airport is Guwahati (GAU), about a 3-hour drive (100km) from Shillong. Shillong has its own airport at Umroi (SHL), 30km from the city, but it has limited flights, mostly connecting through Kolkata. Most travellers fly into Guwahati.
By rail: The nearest railway station is in Guwahati. Meghalaya has no rail network, so you will need to take a taxi or shared sumo from the station for the 3-hour journey to Shillong, and another 2 hours from there to Cherrapunji.
By road: Shillong is the state capital and the central hub for travel within Meghalaya. Cherrapunji (Sohra) is 53km from Shillong, a beautiful but very winding 2-hour drive.
The weather is pleasant from October to April, with clear skies and comfortable temperatures, making it the best time for trekking and sightseeing. The monsoon, from June to September, is intense. Cherrapunji receives over 10,000mm of rain, transforming the landscape into a brilliant, deep green. While some waterfalls are at their most powerful, be aware that some caves and trails may close, and the rain is relentless.
