A look around
What's here
The home is surrounded by trees and flowers, with sunlit spaces to sit out on a clear day. This is a large home, built to host travellers on the challenging route through Arunachal. There are 15 rooms in total, each with its own bed, attached bathroom, and a room heater for the cold nights. The setup is straightforward and clean, designed for a comfortable halt. The place is run by a local family, and guests often speak of their warmth. It’s the kind of place where you can ask for an omelette late at night or get advice on the road ahead. While meals are not included by default, the kitchen is accessible, and home-cooked food can be arranged on request. As one guest, Rahul Dey, noted, "The chicken curry tasted like the ultimate pahadi chicken I’ve ever had - rich in flavor and perfectly cooked." Another guest, Arif Hussain, said, "Quiet and peaceful environment with absolutely beautiful family as our hosts. We felt like actual guests staying there. They went out of their way to ensure that we had the best experience."

Around the stay

Things to do nearby.

Bomdila is a key stop on the journey into the higher reaches of Arunachal. The Bomdila Monastery is just a few steps away from the home. For the rest of the circuit, you’ll be driving.

Tawang Monastery, or Galden Namgey Lhatse, is the largest in India and the main destination for many travellers in the region. It’s a full day’s drive from Bomdila.

Sela Pass & Sela Lake are on the high-altitude road between Bomdila and Tawang. At 4,170 metres, the pass is often snow-bound and the lake is frozen for much of the winter. The views are immense.

Madhuri Lake, officially Sangetsar Tso, is a high-altitude lake formed by an earthquake. It’s about 45km from Tawang and is named after the actress Madhuri Dixit, who filmed a song here.

Bumla Pass is on the India-China border (LAC), about 37km from Tawang. It offers a stark, high-altitude landscape and a direct view of the border post. A special permit is required to visit.

Ziro Valley is the heartland of the Apatani people, known for their unique paddy-and-bamboo terrace farming. It's a different circuit but a major cultural hub in Arunachal, especially during the Ziro Music Festival in September.

Logistics

Getting there.

The journey to this part of the Eastern Himalaya is long and requires planning.

By Air: The most reliable major airport is Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport in Guwahati (GAU), about 480km from Tawang. From Guwahati, it’s a two-day drive to Tawang, with an overnight stop in Bomdila. Tezpur Airport (TEZ) is closer but has fewer flights.

By Rail: The nearest major railhead is Rangapara North (RPAN), about 280km from the Tawang region. From there, you will need to hire a vehicle for the multi-day road journey.

By Road: The road journey is the main experience. You enter Arunachal from Assam at Bhalukpong, where Inner Line Permits are checked. Bomdila is the typical halfway point and overnight stop, about 165km before Tawang. The final leg involves crossing the high-altitude Sela Pass (4,170m).

Seasons

Best time to visit.

The best season to travel through this region is from March to October. The weather is pleasant, and the roads are generally open. The high-altitude Sela Pass can close due to heavy snow anytime from December to February, cutting off road access to Tawang. For those interested in the Ziro Music Festival, September is the month to visit Ziro Valley.
