Things to do nearby.

Shillong is a city you can explore on foot or by car. Ward's Lake, a 19th-century landmark, is a short drive away, good for a quiet walk or a paddle boat ride among the rhododendrons. The Don Bosco Museum of Indigenous Cultures offers a deep look into the region's tribes, spread across seven floors.

For views, Shillong Peak is the highest point in the area at 1,965 metres, offering a full valley panorama on a clear day. Laitlum Canyons, about 25km away, provides a more dramatic ridge-top perspective at what feels like the ‘end of the hills’.

A short drive from the city centre takes you to Elephant Falls, a popular three-tiered waterfall. For a different kind of quiet, the Mawphlang Sacred Grove is a protected Khasi forest about 25km away, best explored with a local guide who can share its history.

Logistics

Getting there.

The most common way to reach Shillong is by road. The nearest major airport and railway station are in Guwahati, Assam (GAU), about 100km away. The drive from Guwahati to Shillong takes around three hours on NH6. Shillong has its own airport in Umroi (SHL), 30km from the city, but it serves limited flights, mostly from Kolkata, and can be affected by weather. Taxis are readily available from both airports and the Guwahati railway station.

Seasons

Best time to visit.

The best time for clear skies and pleasant weather in the Khasi Hills is from October to April. The days are sunny and the views of the surrounding hills are sharp. The monsoon season, from June to September, brings the heavy rainfall the region is famous for. While this is when the waterfalls are at their most powerful, travel can be disrupted and some sights may be closed.
