“Bah this property gave the best 2 day trek to Wei Kyllang, Wei Tlai and Myor living root bridge. He has extensive knowledge about north-east, places, and history. He also gave great insights on life. I do recommend him as a guide.”
Your host, Batista, will help you plan trips to the region's main sights and lesser-known trails. The home is a good starting point for exploring the Khasi & Jaintia Hills.
The living root bridges are a worth seeing. The most famous is the double-decker bridge in Nongriat, which requires a descent of over 3,500 steps into the valley. Batista can guide you on this trek or suggest others.
The area around Cherrapunji (Sohra) is known for its caves. Mawsmai Cave is well-lit and accessible for most visitors, while Krem Phyllut offers a more rustic caving experience.
In the winter months, from January to March, the Umngot river at Dawki runs glass-clear. You can take a boat ride on the water, which forms the border with Bangladesh.
Visit Mawlynnong, often called 'Asia's Cleanest Village'. A short walk from the village leads to the Riwai sky walk, a bamboo viewpoint offering panoramic views of the plains.
Just a short drive from Cherrapunji is Nohkalikai Falls, India's tallest plunge waterfall at 340 metres. The view is most dramatic during and just after the monsoon.
By Air: The nearest airport is Shillong Airport (SHL) at Umroi, about 30km away, with limited flights mostly connecting through Kolkata. The more common arrival point is Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport in Guwahati (GAU), Assam, which is 100km away. A taxi from Guwahati to Shillong takes about 3 hours.
By Rail: Meghalaya has no rail lines. The nearest major railway station is in Guwahati, 100km from Shillong. From the station, you can hire a shared or private taxi to reach the home.
By Road: Shillong is the central hub for the region. The home is accessible by road, and it serves as a base for trips to Cherrapunji (53km, a 2-hour drive) and Dawki (95km).
The best season to visit the Khasi Hills is from October to April, when the weather is dry and pleasant, perfect for trekking and sightseeing. The skies are clear, and the rivers, like the Umngot at Dawki, are at their most transparent.
The monsoon, from June to September, is intense, with the region receiving over 10,000mm of rainfall. While some waterfalls and caves may be closed due to the heavy flow, this is when Meghalaya is at its greenest. The clouds hang low in the valleys, and the waterfalls are at their most powerful.
