The sound of the Baspa river reaches you before you reach the door. The home is set back from the small village road, surrounded by an apple orchard. The last few metres are on foot, a path that reminds you to slow down. Inside, the home is simple and warm. There are three private bedrooms, each with its own bathroom and a king-sized bed. The rooms are built in a traditional style, with wood panelling and large windows that look out towards the mountains. There is a common dining area where meals are served. The host, Ajay, lives here with his family, and they run the home. The real draw is the food, cooked in the family kitchen. Guests often talk about it. "Ajay makes the most amazing food and the coffee I have ever had," one wrote. Another mentioned the meals were "very pure and delicious." Expect simple, local dishes, both vegetarian and non-vegetarian, made with care. This is not a hotel. It is a home, and you are a guest of the family. As one visitor put it, "I could hear the river while I was in my room and it was the most calming experience." Logistics

Getting there.

Chitkul is in the Sangla Valley of Kinnaur, a remote part of Himachal Pradesh. The journey is a significant part of the experience.

By Air: The nearest major airport is Chandigarh (IXC), which has good connectivity from across India. From Chandigarh, it is a long road journey of about 10-12 hours. The airport at Shimla (SLV) is closer, but flights are infrequent and weather-dependent.

By Rail: The nearest major railway station is in Chandigarh. You can also take a train to Kalka and then board the UNESCO-listed Kalka-Shimla toy train for a scenic, slower journey up to Shimla. From Shimla, you will need to travel by road.

By Road: From Shimla or Chandigarh, you can hire a taxi or take a bus towards Sangla and Chitkul. The roads in the Himalayas are narrow and winding. A 100-kilometre journey can easily take four to six hours. Drive only during the day.

Seasons

Best time to visit.

The best months to visit are from March to June, when the weather is pleasant and the snow from winter has melted. Another window is from September to November, after the monsoon, when the skies are clear and the views are sharp.

The monsoon months of July and August see heavy rainfall, and the risk of landslides on the roads is high. Winter, from December to February, brings heavy snow. The village is often covered in a thick white blanket, which is beautiful but can make access difficult.
