The home is a good starting point for exploring the Khasi Hills. The famous living root bridges, including the Nongriat double-decker bridge, are a drive and a 3,500-step trek away. Closer by are the Mawsmai and Krem Phyllut caves, which offer a glimpse into the region's limestone formations. Nohkalikai Falls, India's tallest plunge waterfall at 340 metres, is also in the Cherrapunji area.
A day trip can take you to Mawlynnong, known as Asia's cleanest village, with its Riwai sky walk made of bamboo. Another popular trip is to Dawki on the Bangladesh border, where the Umngot river runs glass-clear from January to March, allowing for boat rides that feel like floating on air.
By Air: The nearest major airport is Guwahati (GAU), about 100km from Shillong. From Guwahati, it’s a 3-hour drive to Shillong, and another 2 hours to Cherrapunji. A smaller airport at Shillong (SHL) is closer but has limited connectivity, mostly via Kolkata.
By Rail: The nearest major railhead is in Guwahati, 100km from Shillong. There is no railway network within Meghalaya. Taxis are available at the station for the onward journey.
By Road: Shillong is the main road hub for the region. Cherrapunji (Sohra) is 53km from Shillong, a winding 2-hour drive. Dawki is about 95km from Shillong.
The best season to visit is from October to April, when the skies are clearer and the weather is pleasant for sightseeing. The monsoon, from June to September, is a different experience altogether. The region receives over 10,000mm of rain, turning the landscape a brilliant, intense green. While some caves and waterfalls may be inaccessible during heavy rains, the clouds and mist create a unique atmosphere.
