Pahalgam is a base for some of Kashmir's most accessible high-altitude scenery. Aru Valley, a pine-fringed meadow, is a 12km drive away and serves as the gateway for the Kolahoi glacier trek. Closer by is Betaab Valley, just 7km from town, a popular family spot for a half-day picnic by the river. The Lidder River itself runs through Pahalgam, offering quiet walks and opportunities for trout fishing. Chandanwari, 16km up the valley, is the starting point for the annual Amarnath Yatra pilgrimage and a popular snow-play area in winter. For a shorter walk, Baisaran, known as 'Mini Switzerland', is a 5km uphill trail to an alpine meadow where you can hire ponies. Serious trekkers can take on the 16km return hike to Tulian Lake, a stunning alpine lake at 3,353m. Within Pahalgam town itself, you can visit the 12th-century Mamleshwar Temple.
The nearest airport is Sheikh-ul-Alam International Airport in Srinagar (SXR), 95km from Pahalgam. The drive takes around 3 hours via the town of Anantnag. Taxis are readily available at the airport. The closest railhead is in Banihal, 110km away, which connects to the Indian railway network through a tunnel. From Banihal, you can hire a taxi for the rest of the journey. Most travellers arrive by road from Srinagar (95km), the summer capital and the main hub for exploring Kashmir. Anantnag (45km) is the last large town and district headquarters before you reach Pahalgam.
The best time to visit Pahalgam is from April to October. Spring and summer bring green meadows and pleasant weather for trekking and sightseeing. The annual Amarnath Yatra takes place during July and August, making the area busier. From November to March, the higher trails are blocked by snow, but the valley transforms into a winter landscape. This is a good time for those wanting to experience snowfall, though you should check road conditions before travelling.
