Dirang is a key stop on the road into the heart of Arunachal, making it a good place to acclimatise and explore the region.
Tawang Monastery, or Galden Namgey Lhatse, is the largest monastery in India and the second largest in the world. Founded in the 17th century, it's a multi-day journey from the plains, with Dirang serving as a popular overnight stop on the way.
Sela Pass & Sela Lake sit at a high altitude of 4,170 meters. The pass is the main route to Tawang and is often covered in snow. The lake by its side stays frozen for much of the winter, surrounded by a stark, beautiful landscape.
Madhuri Lake, officially Sangetsar Tso, is about 45km from Tawang. It was formed by an earthquake and is named after the Bollywood actress who filmed a song here. The landscape is dotted with dead tree trunks rising from the water.
Ziro Valley is the heartland of the Apatani people, known for their unique paddy-and-fish cultivation and bamboo groves. It’s a longer journey from Dirang but worth it, especially in September for the Ziro Music Festival.
Bumla Pass, at the India-China border (LAC), is a high-altitude pass 37km from Tawang. It requires a special permit to visit and offers a stark reminder of the region's geography and history.
By Air: The most reliable major airport is Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport in Guwahati (GAU), about 480km from Tawang. The drive into the mountains from here is typically broken over two days. A closer airport is at Tezpur (TEZ), about 320km from Tawang, but it has fewer flight connections. Dirang is a major stop on the drive from either airport towards Tawang.
By Rail: The nearest major railhead is Rangapara North (RPAN), about 280km from the Tawang region. From there, you will need to hire a taxi or take a shared vehicle for the multi-day road journey.
By Road: The journey into this part of Arunachal begins at Bhalukpong, the gateway town on the Assam-Arunachal border where permits are checked. The road then climbs to Bomdila (165km), a common first-night halt. Dirang is the next major town before the final ascent over Sela Pass to Tawang (320km from the start).
The best season to travel through this region is from March to October. The weather is pleasant, and the roads are generally open. Spring (March-April) brings rhododendron blooms, while autumn (September-October) offers clear skies after the monsoon. The Ziro Music Festival in September is a major draw for the nearby Ziro Valley.
Heavy snowfall from December to February often closes Sela Pass, cutting off road access to Tawang. Plan your winter travel accordingly.
