Dirang is a crucial stop on the circuit through western Arunachal Pradesh, a place to acclimatise before heading to the high passes and the main destination of Tawang.
From here, you can explore the wider region. About 150km further up the road is Tawang Monastery, or Galden Namgey Lhatse. It's the largest monastery in India, a 17th-century complex that feels like a city unto itself. The journey to Tawang takes you over the formidable Sela Pass, at an altitude of 4,170 metres. The high-altitude Sela Lake is often frozen in winter, surrounded by a stark, beautiful landscape.
From Tawang, a 45km drive takes you to Sangetsar Tso, popularly known as Madhuri Lake after the Bollywood film shot here. The lake was formed by an earthquake and is surrounded by a forest of dead tree trunks rising from the water. For a view of the Line of Actual Control (LAC) with China, you can arrange a trip to Bumla Pass, 37km from Tawang. This requires a special permit, which your driver can help facilitate.
While in a different direction, many travelers combine a Tawang circuit with a visit to Ziro Valley, the heartland of the Apatani tribe. It's known for its unique paddy-and-bamboo terrace farming and the Ziro Music Festival in September.
Dirang lies on the main road connecting the plains of Assam to Tawang in the Eastern Himalaya.
By Air: The most reliable major airport is Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport in Guwahati (GAU), about 330km away. The drive from Guwahati to Dirang is typically broken with an overnight stop. The closest functional airport is in Tezpur (TEZ), around 170km away, but it has fewer flight connections.
By Rail: The nearest major railhead is Rangapara North (RPAN), from which you’ll need to hire a taxi for the multi-day journey into the mountains.
By Road: The drive into Arunachal Pradesh begins at Bhalukpong, the entry point from Assam where Inner Line Permits are checked. Dirang is a common and recommended overnight stop after Bomdila, breaking the long 2-day drive from Guwahati or Tezpur to Tawang.
The best time to travel this route is from March to October. The weather is pleasant, and the roads are generally open. The Ziro Music Festival in September makes it a popular month for the wider region. From December to February, heavy snowfall often closes Sela Pass, cutting off road access between Dirang and Tawang.
