- From Gangtok: 5 hours, 130 km, shared taxi till 2 pm - From Siliguri or NJP: 6 hours, 160 km - From Pelling: 1.5 hours, 35 km - From Darjeeling: 5 hours via Jorethang

- Indian citizens: No permit needed for Yuksom itself. - Foreign nationals: Inner Line Permit (ILP) at Rangpo or Melli entry, plus a separate trekking permit for Goecha La (arrange through a Yuksom-based trek operator).

What about 1. dubdi monastery?

Sikkim's first monastery (1701). 40-minute forest walk uphill from the town square. Small, peaceful, worth the climb.

What about 2. norbugang chorten?

Coronation Throne Park. Where the first Chogyal of Sikkim was crowned in 1642. Short walk from the main street.

What about 3. khecheopalri lake?

30 minute drive. Holy lake where leaves never settle on the surface. Sacred to Buddhists and Lepchas. Short walk from the parking lot to the lake viewpoint.

What about 4. kanchenjunga falls?

1 hour drive. Powerful waterfall, 2-tier, accessible via a steep staircase. Best in monsoon but visible year round.

What about 5. goecha la trek (11 days)?

The big draw. 90 km round-trip trek to 4,940 metres. Views of Kanchenjunga, Pandim, and Mount Talung from the Goecha La viewpoint.

What about goecha la trek: quick primer?

- Duration: 10 to 11 days round-trip from Yuksom - Best months: April to May (rhododendron bloom), October to November (clear views) - Grade: Moderate to difficult - Max altitude: 4,940 metres - Cost: ₹18,000 to ₹35,000 through a local operator, depending on group size and inclusions - Permits: Trek permits and entry to Kanchenjunga National Park

What about where to stay?

Yuksom has grown a homestay scene over the last five years. Most are small, family-run, with 2 to 4 rooms. Expect clean rooms, bucket or solar-heated hot water, home-cooked Sikkimese food (phagshapa, gundruk, sael roti).

What about what to eat?

- Phagshapa: fatty pork with radish, eaten with rice - Gundruk soup: fermented leafy greens, sour and warming - Sael roti: deep-fried rice-flour ring, sweet, best at breakfast - Churpi: dried yak cheese, chewed for hours, a Sikkim classic - Tongba: millet beer, sipped hot through a bamboo straw

1. Carry cash. There is one ATM in Yuksom and it is often out of service. 2. Trek permit lead time. If you plan Goecha La, contact operators 3 weeks ahead. 3. Mobile signal is patchy. Jio works in the town. Beyond that, offline maps are essential. 4. Pack warm. Yuksom drops to 5 degrees at night even in October. 5. No bars, no nightlife. Evening means monastery hours and bed.

What about combining with other sikkim trips?

Most travellers do Gangtok plus Yuksom plus Pelling as a 7 to 10 day West Sikkim loop. If only Yuksom, 3 nights is the sweet spot unless you are trekking.
