What about day 3: dirang to tawang via sela pass (6 hours, 140 km)?

A small town at 2,200 metres. Most travellers pass through quickly, but Bomdila has two solid reasons to stop: the Bomdila Monastery (Gaden Namgyal Lhatse) and the Upper Gompa viewpoint. Apple orchards surround the town.

Dirang is where most Arunachal regulars tell you to stop for a full day. Hot sulphur springs, apple orchards, yak breeding centre, and one of the most scenic valleys on the entire route.

- National Yak Research Centre: 30 minutes from town, worth 1 hour - Sangti Valley: 15 km from Dirang, famous for migratory black-necked cranes (Nov to Feb) - Dirang Dzong: 17th-century fort ruins - Sulphur Hot Springs: near the Dzong, simple facilities - Kiwi Orchards: pluck your own in season (Nov-Dec)

What about where to stay in dirang?

Dirang has the best homestay infrastructure on the entire route. Wooden cottages, apple orchard setting, home-cooked Monpa food.

The destination. At 3,050 metres, Tawang is home to India's largest Buddhist monastery and the second-largest in Asia (after Lhasa).

What about vehicle recommendation?

- Innova or Scorpio: standard for most travellers - Fortuner: if you want extra comfort on the Sela Pass climb - Sedan: avoid. Dirang-Tawang road has bad patches. - Self-drive: not recommended for first-timers. Permits, checkposts, and altitude driving are unforgiving.

1. Acclimatise at Dirang. Do not go Dirang to Tawang in one day if you have altitude sensitivity. 2. Carry Diamox if prone to altitude sickness. Start the day before Tawang. 3. Fuel up at every town. Petrol pumps are spaced out. 4. Cash is critical. ATMs work in Bomdila and Tawang only. 5. Do not drive after dark. The Tawang road is treacherous at night.

What about combining with kaziranga?

Many travellers combine this with a Kaziranga safari at the start or end. Standard route: Guwahati to Kaziranga (2 nights) then Guwahati to Bhalukpong to Tawang and back.
