What about 1. double decker root bridge, nongriat?

The famous one. Two bridges stacked vertically across the same stream. About 15 metres long, 30 metres above the water.

What about 2. ritymmen root bridge?

The longest single-span root bridge in Meghalaya at about 30 metres. Less touristy, halfway down the same trail as the Double Decker.

What about 3. riwai root bridge, near mawlynnong?

The easy one. 15 minute walk from the road, much shorter but genuinely a living bridge.

What about getting to tyrna village?

- 18 km from Cherrapunji town, 45 minute drive - The cab parks at Tyrna. The trail starts from there. - Entry fee ₹50 per person to the local community

What about the descent?

- Start by 7 am (do not start later than 9 am) - 3,500 steps down, mostly stone with some cement - Takes 60 to 90 minutes depending on fitness - Two rope bridges along the way, safe but swaying

What about at nongriat village?

- The village sits on the stream. Small, maybe 40 families. - Visit the Double Decker (5 min from the homestays) - Optional: hike another 30 minutes to Rainbow Falls - Several basic homestays offer lunch and overnight stay

What about when not to go?

- July to August: trails are slick, leeches active, approach rivers can swell - After heavy rain any month: steps become treacherous - If you have bad knees: the descent is tough, the climb brutal - If you have only a half day: this is a full-day trek

- Adult, reasonably fit: yes - Kids 10 and up: yes, slowly - Kids under 10: the climb back up is too much - Over 65 or with knee issues: skip. Do the easy Riwai root bridge near Mawlynnong instead.

Stay in Cherrapunji the night before so you can start Tyrna by 7 am.

What about common mistakes?

1. Starting at 11 am. By the time you climb out, it is 4 pm and brutally hot. 2. Wearing wrong shoes. Flip-flops will destroy your trip. 3. Not carrying water. There is water in the village but not on the descent. 4. Rushing. Take 30-min breaks at the root bridges. 5. Skipping Rainbow Falls. It is the best part if you have the energy.
