What about safety and facilities?

The page requires smoke detectors with an audible alarm in each apartment or room, a fire blanket and fire extinguisher, and displayed escape routes and fire protection overview. There must be no more than ten people for each fully equipped bathing facility. If you register a summer house, you must show access to drinking water with certification from health inspectors.

What about penalties and appeals?

Renting an unregistered property can bring an administrative fine of up to ISK 1 million per violation. Breaking the night or income limits can mean deregistration, refusal of registration next year and fines. Appeals against decisions of the District Commissioner can be lodged within three months of receipt.
