What about the scheme, in plain facts?

Authority: Tourism Department, UT of Jammu and Kashmir. Units are registered under the J&K Registration of Tourist Trade Act (1978, 1982, 2011 as listed in the order) and its rules. The prescribed authority of the district decides the case.

What about what the unit must have?

- Airy, clean rooms with adequate bedding, furniture and properly fitted washrooms. - A family kitchen with utensils, crockery and cutlery, and catering with high hygiene on request. - Traditional architecture, materials and decoration are preferred, not required.

What about how the process works?

1. Apply with the application form, the checklist of facilities, an undertaking or self declaration and a police verification. The order lists these as annexures. 2. Documents: a list of family members with photographs, land ownership certificate from the Tehsildar (through the Deputy Commissioner), lease or NOC if the owner is someone else, Aadhaar, a character certificate from the police station, photographs of the exterior and each bedroom and bathroom, and a public notice in the print media

What about renewal, rates and obligations?

Registration is renewed every three years, subject to feedback from guests, and the renewal fee follows the Tourist Trade Act. Owners must keep a guest register with government ID, a numbered bill book, a complaint book and the department's feedback form, display the registration certificate and rate list, and email guest information to the department quarterly. The registration fee amount, the processing time, the online portal address and any penalty amounts are not in the order we read. The category table (the order says homestays will be categorised) was not legible in our copy.

How many rooms can a J&K homestay have?

Between 1 and 4 bedrooms for guests.

Can I let the house to someone else to run?

No. The order says the owner operates the homestay for all purposes and may not sublet it.

How often do I renew?

Every three years, and renewal depends on guest feedback.

How much does registration cost?

The order says the fee is as prescribed and does not state it. Ask the Tourism Department.
