A 6-day expedition through Arunachal Pradesh's most dramatic landscapes. Drive from Guwahati through Kameng Valley to Dirang - a warm Monpa town with hot springs and apple orchards. Cross the legendary Sela Pass (13,700 ft) to reach Tawang - home to India's largest Buddhist monastery and the site of the 1962 war. Stay 3 nights in Tawang for the monastery, Madhuri Lake, Bumla Pass, and the stunning War Memorial. Return via Dirang. All stays at Google-rated homestays.
PERMITS: Inner Line Permit (ILP) mandatory for all Indian citizens. Apply online at arunachalilp.com (₹100, takes 24-48 hrs). Foreign nationals need Protected Area Permit (PAP) from Ministry of Home Affairs. We help with ILP applications. BEST TIME: October-April. Oct-Nov for crystal-clear mountain views and comfortable temperatures. March-April for rhododendron blooms. Sela Pass may be snow-blocked Dec-Feb (check before travel). Monsoon (June-Sept) brings landslides — avoid. GETTING THERE: Fly to Guwahati (GAU) — Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport. Direct flights from Delhi (2.5 hrs), Kolkata (1.5 hrs), Mumbai (3.5 hrs), Bangalore (3.5 hrs). Guwahati to Dirang is 10-11 hrs by road — we arrange an Innova/Bolero with experienced hill driver. ALTITUDE: Dirang sits at 5,000 ft. Tawang town is at 10,000 ft. Sela Pass reaches 13,700 ft. Bumla Pass hits 15,200 ft. Acclimatise in Dirang before climbing. Carry Diamox if altitude-sensitive. WHAT TO PACK: Heavy warm layers (Tawang drops to -5°C in winter, 5-15°C in shoulder season), waterproof jacket, trekking shoes, sunscreen + sunglasses (high-altitude UV), power bank (limited charging points on long drives). Mobile signal is patchy — BSNL works best, Jio has some coverage. FOOD: Monpa cuisine is unique — thukpa (noodle soup), momos (steamed dumplings), zan (millet porridge), yak butter tea, churpi (dried yak cheese). Local restaurants in Tawang town serve excellent food. Your homestay hosts cook authentic Monpa meals. ROAD CONDITIONS: Guwahati-Dirang road is mostly good (NH13). Dirang-Tawang via Sela Pass has stretches of broken road — an SUV with high clearance is essential. BRO maintains the roads but post-monsoon patches take time. BUMLA PASS: Requires separate permit (arranged locally in Tawang, ₹500). Only Indian nationals allowed. Open 8 AM-2 PM. Chinese soldiers sometimes visible across the border. Madhuri Lake (Sangetsar) is on the way. MOBILE/ATM: BSNL has best coverage. ATMs only in Dirang and Tawang town — carry cash. UPI works at some shops in Tawang.
