The first thing you notice is the quiet. Then the smell of pine, and maybe woodsmoke from the kitchen. The home is built in the local style, with walls of wood and woven bamboo, set against a backdrop of green forest. It sits on a small patch of land with a vegetable garden and a kiwi orchard, just off the main road. Inside, the heart of the home is the large common area with its central hearth, where meals are served and stories are shared. The space is simple and benches. There are three private bedrooms, each with its own attached bathroom. The rooms are panelled in wood, making them feel warm and contained. They are set up for Ziro's cold weather, with room heaters and electric bed warmers to keep things comfortable, even in January. As one guest, Hannah, noted, "The room felt very cozy and welcoming, and you could tell that a lot of thought had gone into the details." The hosts, Mr. Chada and his family, live here too. They are a constant, warm presence. Mr. Chada is known for his kindness and help in planning local outings. "He supported us a lot with organizing our stay and was always available whenever we had questions or needed help." The food, cooked by Aunty, is what most people remember long after they leave. Ziro is not a town of monuments, but a landscape to be walked through. The valley is the heartland of the Apatani people, known for their unique agricultural system of wet rice cultivation and fish farming in the same fields. The landscape is a patchwork of these paddy fields, separated by bamboo groves and pine-clad hills. The best way to see it is to walk. Mr. Chada can help organize a guide for a day-long trek through the surrounding forests and villages.

In September, the valley hosts the Ziro Music Festival, an outdoor event that draws independent musicians and music lovers from across the country. It’s a busy, lively time to visit.

Logistics

Getting there.

The journey to Ziro is a significant part of the experience. The nearest major airport is in Guwahati, Assam (GAU). Another smaller airport is at Tezpur (TEZ). The closest railway station is Rangapara North in Assam. From any of these points, the final leg of the journey is by road. The drive takes you through the plains of Assam and up into the hills of Arunachal Pradesh, entering at the Bhalukpong checkpost. The roads are winding and mountainous, and the drive can take a full day. It's best to hire a taxi or take a shared sumo jeep from Guwahati or North Lakhimpur.

Best time to visit.

The best months to visit Ziro are from March to October, when the weather is pleasant and the valley is green. The monsoon months, from June to August, see heavy rain but also bring out a lush, vibrant green across the rice paddies. September is a popular month because of the Ziro Music Festival. Winters, from November to February, are very cold, with temperatures often dropping near freezing, but the skies are clear. The home is equipped for the cold.
