Getting there.
Dirang is a key stop on the road journey into western Arunachal Pradesh, typically on the route from Assam towards Tawang.
By Air: The most reliable major airport is Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport in Guwahati (GAU), about 340 km away. The drive from Guwahati takes two days. Tezpur Airport (TEZ) is closer but has fewer flight connections.
By Rail: The nearest major railway station is in Guwahati. Rangapara North is a smaller station that is geographically closer, but Guwahati offers better connectivity from major Indian cities.
By Road: The journey is on mountain roads. From Guwahati or Tezpur, you drive into Arunachal Pradesh via the Bhalukpong checkpost, where Inner Line Permits are verified. The drive to Dirang from the plains usually requires an overnight stop, often in Bomdila. Dirang is the next major town after Bomdila on the way to Sela Pass and Tawang.
Best time to visit.
The best months to travel through this part of Arunachal are from March to May and again from September to October. The weather is clear and the views are sharp. The monsoon months, from June to August, bring heavy rain, which can make road travel difficult. Winters, from November to February, are very cold, and the high-altitude Sela Pass on the road beyond Dirang is often closed due to heavy snow.
