The home's location, a two-minute walk from Kurseong station, makes it a good starting point for exploring the region. The Darjeeling Himalayan Railway, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is right there. You can take the two-hour 'Ghum Loop' joyride for a scenic tour.
For a classic Darjeeling experience, drive to Tiger Hill (11km from Darjeeling town) before dawn to see the first light hit Kanchenjunga. To see where the region's famous tea comes from, visit working estates like Happy Valley or Glenburn for tours and tastings.
For trekkers, the Singalila ridge trek to Sandakphu offers a rare five-peak vista: Everest, Lhotse, Makalu, Kanchenjunga, and Kabru. In Darjeeling town, you can visit the Padmaja Naidu Himalayan Zoological Park and the Himalayan Mountaineering Institute, which was once home to Tenzing Norgay.
The nearest airport is Bagdogra (IXB), about 90km from Darjeeling. The drive up to the hills takes around three hours, via the scenic roads through Mirik or Kurseong.
The main railway station for the region is New Jalpaiguri (NJP), located 88km from Darjeeling. It's the gateway to the hills. From NJP, you can hire a private car or take a shared jeep.
For road travel, Siliguri (75km away) is the main transport hub in the plains, with frequent shared jeeps heading to Darjeeling, Kalimpong, and Kurseong.
The best time to visit the Darjeeling and Kalimpong region is from October to mid-June. The skies are generally clear during these months, offering the best mountain views. The monsoon season, from late June to September, brings heavy rain, fog, and an increased risk of landslides on NH10 and the Pankhabari road. Travel during July and August can sometimes be disrupted by road closures.
