The home is a good point from which to explore the Darjeeling hills. A pre-dawn drive will get you to Tiger Hill, about 11km from Darjeeling town, for its famous sunrise over the Kanchenjunga peaks. On a very clear day, you can even spot Mount Everest.
For a taste of the region's most famous export, visit the Happy Valley or Glenburn tea estates. You can walk through the gardens, see the tea-making process, and join a tasting session.
The Darjeeling Himalayan Railway, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is worth it-do. The two-hour 'joyride' on the toy train from Darjeeling to Ghum and back is a slow, scenic journey through the hills and local markets.
For serious trekkers, the Singalila ridge trek to Sandakphu offers one of the world's great mountain panoramas: a view of Everest, Lhotse, Makalu, and Kanchenjunga all in one frame. This is a multi-day trek and requires a guide and permits.
Closer to Darjeeling town, you can visit the Padmaja Naidu Himalayan Zoological Park, known for its red panda and snow leopard conservation programs. It shares a campus with the Himalayan Mountaineering Institute (HMI), founded by Tenzing Norgay.
By air: The nearest airport is Bagdogra (IXB), about 90km from Darjeeling. The drive up to the hills takes around 3 hours, via the scenic roads through Mirik or Kurseong.
By rail: New Jalpaiguri (NJP) is the main railhead for the region, located 88km from Darjeeling. It connects to major Indian cities. From NJP, you can hire a private car or take a shared jeep. The historic toy train also runs from NJP to Darjeeling, but it's a slow, full-day journey.
By road: Siliguri is the main gateway town in the plains, about 75km away. Shared jeeps and buses run frequently from Siliguri to Darjeeling, Kalimpong, and Kurseong. The home has ample parking space for multiple vehicles if you choose to self-drive.
The best time to visit is from October to mid-June. The skies are clearest post-monsoon, from October to December, offering the best mountain views. Spring, from March to May, brings pleasant weather and blooming rhododendrons. The monsoon season, from late June to September, sees heavy rainfall, which can cause landslides on the main highways like NH10 and the Pankhabari road. Travel during these months can be unpredictable.
