Darjeeling and its surroundings are full of walks, views, and history. You can hire a local car for day trips.
Tiger Hill sunrise is an essential experience. A short drive (11km) from Darjeeling town gets you there for the first light hitting the peak of Kanchenjunga. On clear days, the view stretches to the Everest massif.
The region is famous for its tea. You can visit working gardens like Happy Valley or Glenburn tea estates to see the process from leaf to cup, and finish with a tasting session.
The Darjeeling Himalayan Railway, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is a journey back in time. The two-hour 'joyride' on the toy train from Darjeeling to Ghum and back is a slow, scenic loop through the hills and local markets.

In Darjeeling town, the Padmaja Naidu Himalayan Zoological Park is known for its red panda and snow leopard conservation programs. It shares a campus with the Himalayan Mountaineering Institute (HMI), founded in the wake of the first Everest ascent and once home to Tenzing Norgay.

By Air: The nearest airport is Bagdogra (IXB), around 90km from Darjeeling. The drive takes about 3 hours via the scenic roads through Mirik or Kurseong.
By Rail: New Jalpaiguri (NJP) is the main railhead for the region, located 88km from Darjeeling. It connects to major Indian cities. From Darjeeling, you can also take the slow, scenic toy train, a UNESCO heritage line.
By Road: Siliguri (75km away) is the main transport hub in the plains. From here, you can find shared jeeps and private taxis to Darjeeling, Kalimpong, and Mirik. Darjeeling town itself is the main hub in the hills.
The best season is from October to mid-June. Post-monsoon skies from October to December are crisp and clear, offering the best mountain views. Spring, from March to May, brings pleasant weather and blooming rhododendrons. The monsoon season, from late June to September, is best avoided. Heavy rains can cause landslides, leading to road closures on NH10 and the Pankhabari road.
