A look around
What's here
Gravel crunching under tires as you pull into the wide driveway, with the crisp ridge air of upper Shillong settling early in the evening. Dawan and his family greet guests at the door of this two-storey home set back from the city traffic. Outside, a modest yard holds seating under a sun umbrella by day and transforms into an open pit area when night falls. Guests gather around the outdoor wood fire for a small fee of 300 INR while dinner cooks inside. Inside, the layout accommodates larger family groups or travel parties traveling together across six private bedrooms and six attached bathrooms. The ground level opens directly onto the front gravel porch, while an external staircase leads up to a wide second-floor balcony running along the building face. Every room contains wooden bed frames, warm blankets for mountain nights, and wide windows that bring in clear morning daylight. As one guest noted, "a good budget friendly place and you will feel relaxed as its not in crowded area." Meals are prepared fresh by the hosts in their kitchen, focused on simple local dishes served hot. Dawan takes care of day-to-day requirements, from arranging extra blankets on cold December nights to preparing hot water kettles. Guest reviews highlight this attentiveness, noting that "Dawan and his family were very friendly and happily met with all our requirements," while another traveler mentioned "food quality awesome."

Logistics

Getting there.

Shillong Airport at Umroi is located 30 kilometers from the property. Flight options are limited and primarily connect through Kolkata, with operations subject to mountain weather conditions.

Guwahati Airport lies 100 kilometers away and serves as the primary air gateway for Meghalaya. The drive to Shillong takes roughly 3 hours along National Highway 6.

Guwahati Railway Station, also 100 kilometers distant, is the closest major railhead since Meghalaya has no direct rail network inside the state.

Police Bazar operates as the central taxi hub and market district in Shillong, located a short drive from the property. Umiam Lake sits 17 kilometers north along the Guwahati road, serving as a scenic sunset stop during arrival. Cherrapunji is 53 kilometers south along a 2-hour winding highway, while the border town of Dawki sits 95 kilometers away.

Seasons

Best time to visit.

October through April offers clear blue skies, crisp mountain air, and high visibility across the Khasi Hills. October and November bring warm sunshine during the day and cooler evenings suitable for outdoor bonfires. December and January bring cold nights that require heavy woolens and extra blankets.

Monsoon season runs from June through September. Heavy rain fills the surrounding waterfalls and turns the hills deep green, though clouds frequently obscure mountain viewpoints. Shillong city stays walkable during light rains, though day trips into deeper valleys require patience and flexible timing.
