A look around
What's here
Cold air settles over the pine trees as dusk hits, and woodsmoke fills the garden yard. String lights glow along the roof eaves of the wooden cottage, illuminating timber benches set right on the grass. Inside, the home opens into a clear bedroom fitted with a king bed, room heaters for chilly Khasi nights, and thick blankets ready on the bed. A low vanity mirror stands against the wall, and windows let in morning light through long curtains. The private tiled bathroom has a wall-mounted shower and an electric geyser that keeps hot water running when temperatures drop. The home includes 1 bedroom, 1 bed, and 1 bathroom, accommodating up to 2 guests. Kitchen facilities allow you to cook simple meals, and outdoor parking sits right beside the lawn. On cold evenings, the outdoor area turns into a place to sit around a wood bonfire under the pine canopy. Richie, the host, lives nearby and assists with directions, trip planning, and daily needs. Guests often comment on the personal care: "Richie, the host was so welcoming, humble and supportive that the quality of our stay doubled." Another guest shared, "Hot water available and room heater also they have and we were not able to tolerate that cold so they gave extra room heater and blankets were also available." Reviewers also note that "Their cottages are cozy and spacious," while another added that the host "Arranged bon fire, guided us where to go we had engaging conversation."

Around the stay

Things to do nearby.

Laitlum Canyons sits 25km east of the home. Known as the end of the hills, the steep grassy ridges drop straight into deep green gorges. Visit in the late afternoon for sunset when the mist clears out of the valley floor.

Elephant Falls sits 12km from town. A series of three distinct water cascades tumble through dark rock channels, accessible via stepped walking paths. It makes for an easy morning outing before midday crowds arrive.

Mawphlang Sacred Grove lies 25km southwest in the Khasi Hills. Local guides walk you through an ancient forest where taking anything out of the woods, even a fallen leaf, is forbidden by traditional tribal law. Thick moss coats the trees, and old stone altar slabs sit under the forest canopy.

Shillong Peak reaches 1,965 metres above sea level, making it the highest point in the surrounding hills. On clear winter mornings, you can view the entire town layout spread across the valley floor below.

Ward's Lake is a short drive into central Shillong. Built in the 19th century, this horse-shoe shaped lake has paddle boats, timber footbridges, and flower walks beneath blooming rhododendron trees.

Don Bosco Museum of Indigenous Cultures stands seven storeys high in Mawlai. Each floor documents tribal heritage across the North East with artifacts, traditional clothing, weapons, and architectural models.

Lady Hydari Park & Mini Zoo sits 1km from Police Bazar. Designed in a Japanese garden style, it offers quick walking paths, flowerbeds, and small animal enclosures near the market core.

Cathedral of Mary Help of Christians stands in the city center. Built in 1936 with tall Gothic arches and stained glass windows, it sits on a high rock foundation overlooking the town roads.

Logistics

Getting there.

Shillong Airport at Umroi sits 30km from the home. Flight connections are limited and weather-dependent, running mostly via Kolkata, so check schedule status beforehand.

Guwahati Airport is 100km away and serves as the primary air gateway into Meghalaya. The drive takes roughly 3 hours along National Highway 6, winding past hills and Umiam Lake.

Guwahati Railway Station is the nearest major rail hub, located 100km from Shillong. There are no rail tracks within Meghalaya itself, so onward travel requires hiring a shared Sumo or private taxi from the station exit.

Police Bazar serves as the primary transport hub in central Shillong. Taxis and local Sumo vehicles assemble here for city runs and regional departures.

Umiam Lake sits 17km north on the main highway route from Guwahati. The large reservoir provides a standard sunset stop for road travelers entering Shillong.

Cherrapunji, also known as Sohra, is 53km south. The drive takes about 2 hours along winding ridge roads, connecting visitors to waterfall circuits and limestone caves.

Dawki lies 95km south near the Bangladesh border. Travelers come here to see the clear waters of the Umngot River and the border crossing.

Seasons

Best time to visit.

October through April brings clear skies, crisp high-country air, and sharp valley visibility across the Khasi Hills. Daytime temperatures stay pleasant for walking, while nights get cold enough to require room heaters and thick bedding.

June through September marks the heavy monsoon season. Rain falls heavily across Shillong, filling the surrounding waterfalls and turning the pine forests bright green. While central Shillong stays walkable, heavy rain can temporarily close mountain viewpoints, and power cuts occur more frequently during storm passes.
