The first thing you see from the balcony is the mountain. The home sits in Sissu, a village that serves as a gateway to the high passes of Spiti. The air is thin, the light is sharp. The home has four private bedrooms, each with its own attached bathroom and a king-sized bed. The rooms are simple and warm, panelled in light wood, with space for a small table and chairs. Large windows look out onto the valley. The space is run by Santosh ji and his children, Akshay and Kashish, who live on the property and manage the kitchen and guest needs. As one guest puts it, they "host you with love and like family." The in-house restaurant serves simple, fresh meals. Guests often mention the food is "tasty and spicy," with fresh ingredients. Things to do nearby.

From Sissu, the rest of the Spiti circuit is a day's drive away. Key Monastery is the largest in the valley, a thousand-year-old complex clinging to a conical hill. It’s an active centre for Lamaist learning.

Kibber village, at 4,270 metres, used to be one of the highest motorable villages in the world. It’s a base for treks and a window into traditional Spitian life. Nearby, the Chicham bridge spans a deep gorge - it's Asia's highest suspension bridge and connects Kibber to the rest of the valley.

For wildlife, Pin Valley National Park is snow leopard country. The landscape is stark and beautiful, though sightings of the cat are rare. For a different kind of history, drive up to Langza village, known for its large Buddha statue and the marine fossils found in the surrounding hills, reminders of when this land was under the Tethys Sea.

Logistics

Getting there.

The road to Spiti is a journey in itself. The nearest airport is Bhuntar Airport (KUU) in Kullu, about 220 km away via Manali and the Kunzum La pass. This route is only open from June to October. A second option is Shimla Airport (SLV), which is 410 km away and connects via the Kinnaur valley.

The nearest major railhead is in Shimla (410 km), which connects to Kalka with the historic toy train. From Shimla, you will need to hire a taxi or take a bus for the multi-day drive into the valley.

By road, there are two main routes. The road from Manali is shorter (200 km) but involves crossing the high-altitude Kunzum Pass (4,551m) and is only open from June to October. A 4x4 vehicle is recommended. The road from Shimla (410 km) is longer but open for more of the year (April to November) and allows for more gradual acclimatisation. Kaza is the main town in Spiti for fuel, ATMs, and supplies.

Seasons

Best time to visit.

The best time to travel the full Spiti circuit, including the Manali-Kaza road, is from May to October. During these months, the high passes are clear of snow, and the weather is pleasant during the day.

From November to April, the road from Manali via Kunzum La is closed due to heavy snowfall. The valley is still accessible via the Shimla-Kinnaur road, but it's a longer journey into a much colder, snow-covered landscape. Winter is for the adventurous, with temperatures dropping far below freezing.
