Tiger Hill sunrise - About 11km from Darjeeling town, this is the classic viewpoint for the first light hitting Kanchenjunga. On a clear morning, the view can stretch from the peaks of Nepal to Bhutan, including a glimpse of Mount Everest. Go early to get a good spot.
Tea Estates - Darjeeling is synonymous with tea. Visit working gardens like Happy Valley or the more exclusive Glenburn Tea Estate. Many offer guided tours of the factory, explaining the process from leaf to cup, followed by a tasting session.
Darjeeling Himalayan Railway - A UNESCO World Heritage site, the 'toy train' is a piece of living history. The two-hour 'Joyride' from Darjeeling to Ghum and back is the most popular trip, looping around the famous Batasia Loop with its war memorial and panoramic views.
Singalila Ridge Trek - For serious walkers, the trek to Sandakphu on the Singalila Ridge offers one of the world's great mountain panoramas. From here, you can see five of the world's highest peaks: Everest, Lhotse, Makalu, Kanchenjunga, and Kabru, all in one frame.
Padmaja Naidu Zoo & HMI - Located on the same campus in Darjeeling, this is a worth visiting. The zoo is renowned for its conservation breeding programs for the snow leopard and red panda. Next door, the Himalayan Mountaineering Institute celebrates the region's climbing legacy, founded by Tenzing Norgay after his Everest ascent.
By Air: The nearest airport is Bagdogra (IXB), about 90km from Darjeeling. The drive up to the hills takes around 3 hours, via the scenic roads of Mirik or Kurseong.
By Rail: New Jalpaiguri (NJP) is the gateway railhead for the entire region, located 88km from Darjeeling. It connects to major Indian cities. From NJP, you can hire a taxi. The historic Darjeeling Himalayan Railway also connects NJP to Darjeeling, but it's a slow, scenic journey best treated as an experience in itself.
By Road: Siliguri, 75km from Darjeeling, is the main transport hub in the plains. From here, you can find shared jeeps and private taxis to Darjeeling, Kalimpong, and other hill towns.
The best time to visit the Darjeeling and Kalimpong hills is from October to mid-June. The post-monsoon months of October and November offer crisp air and the clearest mountain views. Spring, from March to May, brings pleasant weather and blooming rhododendrons.
The monsoon season, from late June to September, is best avoided. Heavy rains can cause landslides, leading to frequent road closures on NH10 and the Pankhabari road. While the landscape is lush and green, travel can be unpredictable.
