Things to do nearby.
The home is a starting point for exploring the valleys and meadows of Kashmir. A short drive can take you to Srinagar, the summer capital, for a shikara ride on the famous Dal Lake or a walk through the Mughal gardens of Shalimar Bagh and Nishat Bagh.
For higher altitudes, Gulmarg is about 50 km away. Its two-stage gondola is one of the highest in the world, rising to nearly 4,000 metres for wide-open views of the Pir Panjal range. In winter, its slopes are popular for skiing.
Pahalgam, about 95 km from Srinagar, sits in the Lidder valley. It is the starting point for many treks, and the gateway to the scenic Aru and Betaab valleys, both a short drive further into the mountains. Sonamarg, the 'meadow of gold', is about 87 km away and leads towards the Zoji La pass. A short trek from the meadow takes you to the Thajiwas glacier.
Getting there.
The nearest airport is Sheikh-ul-Alam International Airport in Srinagar (SXR), with direct flights from major Indian cities like Delhi, Mumbai, and Bengaluru. From the airport, you can hire a pre-paid or private taxi for the journey. The alternate airport, used when weather affects Srinagar, is in Jammu (IXJ), about 290 km away.
The closest railway station is in Banihal, 110 km from Srinagar, which connects to the Indian Railways network. The final leg of the journey from Banihal must be completed by road.
Best time to visit.
Kashmir changes with the seasons. April through June is spring, when the tulip gardens are in bloom and the valleys are filled with apple and almond blossoms. September and October bring autumn, with the leaves of the chinar trees turning gold and red. For snow, visit between December and February, when Gulmarg and Pahalgam are often covered in a thick white blanket. The monsoon months of July and August see fewer visitors and green, rain-washed landscapes.
