Tiger Hill is an 11km drive from Darjeeling town. It's famous for its sunrise view, where the first light hits the Kanchenjunga massif. On clear days, you can see a sliver of Mount Everest.
The region is defined by its tea. You can visit working tea gardens like Happy Valley or Glenburn to see the process from leaf to cup and participate in tastings.
The Darjeeling Himalayan Railway, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is worth it-do. The two-hour 'toy train' joyride on the Ghum loop is a slow, scenic journey through the hills and local markets.
For trekkers, the Singalila ridge trek offers one of the world's great mountain panoramas. The trail to Sandakphu reveals a five-peak view: Everest, Lhotse, Makalu, Kanchenjunga, and Kabru.
In Darjeeling town, the Padmaja Naidu Himalayan Zoological Park is known for its red panda and snow leopard conservation programs. It shares a campus with the Himalayan Mountaineering Institute (HMI), once home to Tenzing Norgay.
The nearest airport is Bagdogra (IXB), about 90km from Darjeeling. The drive takes around 3 hours, via the scenic routes of Mirik or Kurseong.
The main railhead for the region is New Jalpaiguri (NJP), located 88km from Darjeeling. It connects the hills to major Indian cities. From NJP, you can hire a car or take a shared jeep. The slow, scenic toy train also runs from NJP to Darjeeling.
Siliguri (75km) is the largest city in the plains and the primary road hub. Shared jeeps and private taxis are readily available here for Darjeeling, Kalimpong, and Mirik.
The best time to visit is from October to mid-June. The skies are generally clear during these months, offering good views of the Himalayas. The monsoon season, from late June to September, brings heavy rain, which can cause landslides on NH10 and the Pankhabari road, often disrupting travel.
