Kausani sits in the Kumaon region, with access to several key sights.
Mukteshwar Temple & Chauli Ki Jali: About 50 km from the main hub of Nainital, this 350-year-old Shiva temple offers panoramic views of the Himalayas. Next to it is Chauli Ki Jali, a cliff edge popular for sightseeing and rock climbing.
Jim Corbett National Park: One of India’s oldest and most prestigious national parks, Corbett is the place to see tigers. The main gate at Ramnagar is a few hours' drive away. The park is open from October to June.
Anasakti Ashram: A quiet ashram in Kausani itself, known for its association with Mahatma Gandhi, who stayed here and wrote his commentary on the Gita. It’s a peaceful spot for reflection, with a small museum and library.
By Air: The nearest airport for the Kumaon region is Pantnagar Airport (PGH). From there, it's a taxi ride of about 4-5 hours to Kausani.
By Rail: The closest major railhead is Kathgodam (KGM), which serves as the gateway to Nainital, Almora, and Kausani. Taxis are readily available at the station for the final leg of the journey.
By Road: Kausani is well-connected by road. It is accessible from major hubs like Nainital and Almora. The drive takes you through winding mountain roads with changing scenery.
The best seasons are from March to June and again from September to November. During these months, the skies are generally clear, offering the best views of the Himalayan peaks. The monsoon months of July and August bring heavy rain and the risk of landslides. The high-altitude passes and destinations like Auli or Chopta may close due to heavy snow from December to February, but Kausani itself remains accessible year-round.
