A look around
What's here
From your room, the view is all green valley. No other buildings, no city noise. The home is run by Sukhdev and Shashi Dogra, who live on the property and look after guests themselves. One guest remembers, "it feels as you are living in your relative's house." The home has six bedrooms, each with its own attached bathroom. The rooms are straightforward and clean, many lined with pine wood panelling that keeps them warm. Each has a king bed, fresh linens, and basic amenities like an electric kettle and a geyser for hot water 24 hours a day. The hosts provide plenty of blankets for the cold mountain nights. The real heart of the place is the food. Shashi’s kitchen sends out simple, delicious Himachali meals. The hosts are attentive to what you might need. For one family with a senior citizen parent, they learned how to prepare light Bengali food. For another guest's birthday, they arranged a cake and decorations on request. It’s this kind of care that people remember long after they’ve left. As one guest wrote, "The stay, delious home cooked food and homely atmosphere made my visit truly special."

Logistics

Getting there.

The closest airport is in Shimla (SLV), at Jubbarhatti, but it has very limited flights and can be affected by weather. The most reliable airport for reaching this part of Himachal is Chandigarh (IXC), which is well-connected to major Indian cities. From Chandigarh, it is a 6-7 hour drive to Narkanda.

The nearest major railhead is Kalka, from where you can take the UNESCO-listed Kalka-Shimla toy train - a slow, scenic journey up the mountains. The main railway station with the best connectivity is Chandigarh. Taxis are available from the airport and railway stations for the onward journey.

Driving up, expect mountain roads. Most highways in Himachal are single-lane with hairpin bends, and a 100 km journey can easily take four to six hours.

Seasons

Best time to visit.

The best time to visit Narkanda is from March to June, when the weather is pleasant and the snow from winter has melted. A second window of clear skies opens up from September to November, offering sharp views of the Himalayan range.

The monsoon months of July and August see heavy rainfall, which can cause landslides on the main highways. Winter, from December to February, brings heavy snowfall, which can be beautiful but may also lead to road closures.
