The first thing you notice is the air - fresh and cool. Then the view, a wide look at the Himalayan range from your window. The home has two simple, clean bedrooms, each with its own bathroom. Both rooms have king-sized beds and large wooden-frame windows that let in plenty of light. The space is straightforward. There's a dining table where meals are served, and a small garden space outside. Your host, Ajay, manages the place himself and cooks the meals. The famous Bhimakali Temple, a mix of Hindu and Buddhist architecture, is a short drive away. It's one of the 51 Shakti Peethas and the main landmark in Sarahan. The woodwork is intricate, and the atmosphere is quiet.

The hills around Sarahan are covered in apple orchards. A walk through them, especially during blossom season in March and April or harvest time in August and September, is a good way to spend an afternoon. Sarahan also serves as the gateway to the Kinnaur valley for those on a longer road trip.

Getting there.

By Air: The nearest major airport is in Chandigarh (IXC), about 275 km away. Shimla's airport (SLV) is closer at around 165 km, but has very limited and weather-dependent flights. From either airport, you will need to hire a taxi for the final 6-8 hour mountain drive.

By Rail: The closest major railhead is Kalka, which connects to the UNESCO heritage toy train to Shimla. From Shimla, it's a road journey to Sarahan. Chandigarh (CDG) is the most reliable railhead for onward road travel.

By Road: Sarahan is on the old Hindustan-Tibet road (now NH-5). It's a common stop for those travelling from Shimla towards Kinnaur and Spiti. Public buses and private taxis are available from Shimla and Rampur Bushahr.

Best time to visit.

The best months to visit are from March to June, when the weather is pleasant and the snow has melted. September through November offer clear skies and crisp air after the monsoon. The monsoon season, July and August, sees heavy rain and can cause landslides on the highway. Winters, from December to February, are cold with a chance of snow.
