Lonavala is full of small treks and viewpoints. During the monsoon, the hills are covered in green and temporary waterfalls appear along the roads. You can drive up to Tiger Point or Duke's Nose for long views of the valleys, though they can be crowded on weekends. The drive itself is the main thing - winding roads through the fog. Several old cave complexes, like Karla and Bhaja Caves, are a short drive away. They are rock-cut Buddhist shrines dating back to the 2nd century BC. For something closer, a walk around the town reveals old colonial-era buildings and local markets selling chikki, the region's famous brittle candy.
By Air - The nearest airports are Pune International Airport (PNQ), about 65 km away, and Mumbai's Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (BOM), about 95 km away. You can hire a cab from either airport for the final leg of the journey.
By Rail - Lonavala has its own railway station (LNL), which is well-connected with regular train services from Mumbai and Pune. It’s a convenient option for travelers coming from either city.
By Road - Lonavala is located directly on the Mumbai-Pune Expressway, making it an easy drive. The journey from Mumbai takes about two hours, and from Pune, it's about an hour and a half, depending on traffic.
The best time to visit Lonavala is during the monsoon, from June to September. The entire region becomes lush and green, the weather is cool, and the waterfalls are at their fullest. The town is covered in a light mist, especially in the mornings and evenings.
Winter, from October to February, is also a good time to visit. The weather is pleasant and dry, ideal for trekking and sightseeing without the rain. The crowds are thinner than in the peak monsoon season. Summer, from March to May, can be hot, but it remains a popular weekend escape from the nearby cities.
