Things to do nearby.
The home is in the Kullu valley, which serves as a gateway to Manali and the higher mountains. Manali is the main hub for activities, about 40 km away.
A drive towards Manali takes you to the Solang Valley, known for adventure sports. From there, you can access the Atal Tunnel, a 9-km tunnel that provides year-round access to Lahaul and Spiti, bypassing the Rohtang Pass.
In Manali itself, you can visit the Hadimba Devi Temple, a four-tiered pagoda-style temple in a cedar forest. The lanes of Old Manali have small cafes and shops. A short drive away are the Vashisht hot springs, where you can take a dip in the public baths.
For trekkers, the path to Triund from McLeodganj is a popular day-hike, offering a direct view of the Dhauladhar mountain range. McLeodganj, the residence of the Dalai Lama, is a few hours' drive away but a worthwhile trip to see the Tsuglagkhang complex.
Getting there.
By air, the nearest airport is Bhuntar Airport (KUU) in Kullu, which is very close but has limited, weather-dependent flights. The most reliable major airport is Chandigarh International Airport (IXC), a 7-8 hour drive away.
By rail, the nearest major railhead is in Chandigarh. From there, you can hire a taxi or take a bus into the Kullu valley. The heritage Kalka-Shimla toy train is a scenic option if your route takes you through Shimla, but it does not serve the Kullu-Manali region directly.
By road, the home is on the main highway connecting Kullu and Manali. Regular buses run from Delhi, Chandigarh, and other northern cities. Driving your own vehicle is common, but be prepared for mountain roads.
Best time to visit.
The best months to visit are from March to June, when the weather is pleasant and the snow from winter has melted. A second window of clear skies opens up from September to November, which is ideal for trekking and paragliding.
The monsoon season, from July to August, brings heavy rain and can cause landslides on the highways, particularly NH-3 and NH-21. Travel during this time requires caution.
Winter, from December to February, brings snow to the upper reaches of Manali and can sometimes block roads. The valley is cold but beautiful.
