A look around
What's here
The home sits on a hillside in Shangarh, looking down into a quiet valley. The building is a mix of traditional Himachali stone-and-wood work and newer construction, with balconies to sit and watch the light change over the mountains. Inside, there are four bedrooms and three bathrooms, with space for up to eight guests. The rooms are simple and clean. Some are finished with pine-wood paneling from floor to ceiling, with a small loft space accessible by a wooden ladder. Others are simpler, with warm blankets and a window looking out at the view. The home is run by a local family, who guests often refer to as 'Didi and Bhaiya'. Their presence is what makes the stay. The food is a big part of the experience here, and it’s what people remember. As one guest, Ties van Gemert, wrote, "The food is delicious." Another, Anirudh Yadav, said the food was "literally mind-blowing". It’s simple, local Himachali food, cooked at home. As another guest put it, the stay "feels like a staying at home but at a very very peaceful location in the mountains."

Logistics

Getting there.

The nearest airport is Bhuntar Airport (KUU) in Kullu-Manali. For more reliable and frequent flights, Chandigarh International Airport (IXC) is the main gateway to Himachal, though it involves a much longer road journey.

The closest major railhead is in Chandigarh. From either the airport or the railway station, you can hire a taxi for the drive up to Shangarh. The nearest major road hub for the region is Manali, which connects the Kullu valley to the rest of the state.

Seasons

Best time to visit.

The best time to visit Shangarh is from March to June, when the snow has melted and the weather is pleasant for walks and exploring the valley. Another good window is from September to November, after the monsoon, for crisp air and clear mountain views.

It's best to avoid the monsoon months of July and August. Heavy rains can cause landslides on the national highways leading into the mountains, which can lead to long travel delays. Winters, from December to February, see snowfall in the upper reaches of the region.
