Gangtok is the gateway to East and North Sikkim. From here, you can arrange trips to some of the region's most iconic spots. Tsomgo Lake, also known as Changu Lake, is a 40km drive away. This glacial lake is often frozen solid in the winter and requires a Restricted Area Permit (RAP) to visit.
Rumtek Monastery, the largest in Sikkim and the seat of the Karmapa Lama, is 24km from Gangtok. It's a centre for Buddhist learning and a place of deep peace, with intricate murals and stunning architecture.
For the famous Yumthang Valley, the 'valley of flowers', you'll need a dedicated trip to North Sikkim, with permits arranged in Gangtok. Lachung serves as the base for this region.
If you're heading to West Sikkim, Pelling is the main hub, about 115km away. It's known for incredible, direct views of Kanchenjunga and its historic monasteries, Pemayangtse and Sanga Choeling. For serious trekkers, the classic Goecha La trek to Kanchenjunga base camp starts from Yuksom, a journey in itself.
The most reliable airport is Bagdogra (IXB) in West Bengal, about 124km away. The drive to Gangtok takes around four hours, sometimes more depending on traffic and road conditions. Sikkim's own airport, Pakyong (PYG), is much closer at 30km, but flights are often diverted to Bagdogra due to unpredictable weather.
The nearest major railway station is New Jalpaiguri (NJP), also in West Bengal, at a distance of 122km. From both NJP and Bagdogra, you can hire a shared or private taxi to reach Gangtok.
Sikkim has two main tourist seasons. March to May is spring, when the rhododendrons are in full bloom across the valleys, especially in North Sikkim. The second window is from October to mid-December, when the monsoon has passed, leaving clear blue skies and sharp, brilliant views of the Himalayan peaks. The monsoon season, from June to September, brings heavy rain and frequent landslides, often closing roads to North Sikkim.
