Himachal Pradesh is a state of many distinct valleys and towns, each with its own character.
From the Kullu valley, Manali is the main hub. It's the gateway to the 9km-long Atal Tunnel, which provides year-round access to Lahaul, and the adventure sports of Solang valley. Closer to town, you can visit the ancient Hadimba Devi temple, explore the cafes of Old Manali, or soak in the Vashisht hot springs.
Further west, the Kangra valley is home to Dharamshala and McLeodganj, the residence of the Dalai Lama. The Tsuglagkhang complex is the heart of the town's Tibetan-Buddhist life. For walkers, the day-hike to Triund offers a classic view of the Dhauladhar mountain range.
Nearby Bir-Billing is a world-renowned destination for paragliding, with October and November being the peak season for flying. The takeoff point at Bir is the second-highest in the world, with landings happening in the village of Billing below.
For a longer, more rugged journey, the Spiti loop is accessible from Manali between June and October. This high-altitude circuit takes you through remote landscapes to places like Kaza, the Ki monastery, and the village of Kibber.
Getting there.
The main entry points to Himachal depend on which valley you are heading to.
By Air: The three main airports are Bhuntar (KUU) for the Kullu-Manali region, Gaggal (DHM) for Dharamshala and McLeodganj, and the small, weather-dependent airport at Shimla (SLV). For a more reliable connection, Chandigarh (IXC) is the largest airport in the plains with good road connectivity to all parts of the state.
By Rail: The Kalka-Shimla toy train is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a scenic, slow way to enter the state capital. For the Kangra side, Pathankot is the nearest major railhead. Chandigarh serves as the most convenient railway station for most destinations in Himachal.
By Road: National highways NH-3 and NH-21 connect the state to the plains, but roads in the mountains are often single-lane with hairpin bends. Journeys are measured in hours, not kilometres.
Best time to visit.
The best time to visit is during two main windows. March through June covers spring and summer, when the snow melts and the weather is pleasant. A second window from September to November offers clear skies after the monsoon, with crisp air and excellent mountain views.
The monsoon months of July and August see heavy rain, which can cause landslides and road closures. Winter, from December to February, brings heavy snow to higher-altitude towns like Manali and Shimla, which can be beautiful but may restrict travel.
