The home is a good base for exploring the Garhwal region. Rishikesh, the Garhwal hub, is the main town nearby. Every evening, you can witness the Ganga Aarti at Triveni Ghat or Parmarth Niketan, a powerful ceremony of light and sound on the riverbank. The town is also the gateway to the Char Dham pilgrimage.
For wildlife, Jim Corbett National Park is a drive away. The park is famous for its tiger population and is best visited between October and June through the Ramnagar gate.
Further into the mountains, you can find some of the highest temples in the world. Tungnath, the highest Shiva temple, is a 4-hour climb from the village of Chopta. It’s a challenging but rewarding trek. In the monsoon season, the Valley of Flowers, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, opens its trails from the Govindghat trailhead. This is a specific window, usually July to September. For winter sports, Auli offers skiing from December to March, and beautiful oak-rhododendron meadows the rest of the year.
Getting there.
The Garhwal region is served by Dehradun’s Jolly Grant Airport (DED). For Kumaon destinations like Nainital or Mukteshwar, the closest airport is in Pantnagar (PGH).
By rail, the main railhead for Garhwal is Haridwar. From here, you can get road transport to Rishikesh, Mussoorie, and the starting points for the Char Dham yatra. The Kumaon railhead is Kathgodam, serving Nainital, Almora, and Mukteshwar.
By road, Rishikesh is the main hub for this part of Garhwal. It connects to the high-altitude routes towards Chopta and Auli.
Best time to visit.
The Western Himalayas are accessible year-round, but different seasons offer different things. The clearest skies and most pleasant weather are from March to June and again from September to November. This is the best time for trekking and long-distance views.
The monsoon months of July and August turn the hills a brilliant green, but this is also the time of heavy rains and potential landslides, so travel can be disrupted. Winter, from December to February, brings snow to high-altitude destinations like Auli and Chopta, which may close roads but open up opportunities for skiing.
