The home is a good base for exploring the wider region of Himachal Pradesh. Most key destinations are a scenic, albeit long, drive away.
A drive towards the Kullu valley can take you to Manali. From there, you can explore Solang valley for adventure sports or drive through the Atal Tunnel, the 9km pass that now offers year-round access to Lahaul. In Manali itself, the ancient Hadimba Devi temple and the cafes of Old Manali are worth a visit.
Heading in another direction leads you to the Kangra valley, home to Dharamshala and McLeodganj, the residence of the Dalai Lama. You can visit the Tsuglagkhang complex, his main temple. For active travelers, the four-hour Triund trek offers a steep but rewarding walk up to a ridge with a direct view of the Dhauladhar mountain wall.
For a unique experience, consider a day trip to Bir-Billing, known as the world's second-highest paragliding takeoff point. The peak season is from October to November, when the skies are clear and the thermals are just right for a long flight over the valley.
By Air: The nearest airports are Bhuntar (KUU) for the Kullu-Manali region, Gaggal (DHM) for Dharamshala, and Shimla (SLV), which has very limited, weather-dependent flights. The most reliable all-weather airport is Chandigarh (IXC) in the plains, from where you can hire a taxi for the final leg of the journey into the hills.
By Rail: The nearest major railhead is Chandigarh (CDG), with connections to all major Indian cities. Pathankot (PTK) is the railhead for the Dharamshala side. For a more scenic journey into Shimla, the UNESCO-listed Kalka-Shimla toy train is an experience in itself.
By Road: The home is accessible by road. Major towns like Manali, Dharamshala, and Shimla serve as hubs for the Himachal Road Transport Corporation (HRTC) buses and local taxis.
The best seasons to visit are from March to June, when the snow melts and the valleys turn green, and again from September to November, for clear post-monsoon skies and crisp mountain air.
The monsoon months of July and August see heavy rainfall, which can cause landslides on the main highways like NH-3 and NH-21, making road travel unpredictable. The winter months from December to February bring heavy snow to the upper reaches of the state, which can be beautiful but may also lead to road closures.
