The home is a good point from which to explore the Darjeeling region. A private vehicle is recommended for day trips.
Tiger Hill sunrise is an 11km drive from Darjeeling town. On a clear day, you see the first light hit Kanchenjunga, and the peaks of Everest, Lhotse, and Makalu are visible in the distance. Plan to leave very early, around 4am, to get a good spot.
Happy Valley and Glenburn are two well-known working tea estates. You can tour the factories, see the tea-plucking process, and participate in guided tastings. They offer a deeper look into the history and craft of Darjeeling tea.
The Darjeeling Himalayan Railway, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is worth it-do. The two-hour ‘joyride’ on the toy train from Darjeeling to Ghum and back is a slow, scenic journey through the hills and local markets.
For serious trekkers, the Singalila ridge trek offers one of the world's great mountain panoramas. The highlight is Sandakphu, from where you can see four of the world's five highest peaks - Everest, Kanchenjunga, Lhotse, and Makalu. This is a multi-day trek and requires a guide and permits.
In Darjeeling town, the Padmaja Naidu Himalayan Zoological Park is known for its conservation breeding programs for the snow leopard and red panda. It shares a campus with the Himalayan Mountaineering Institute (HMI), founded in the wake of Tenzing Norgay and Edmund Hillary's Everest ascent.
By air: The nearest airport is Bagdogra (IXB), around 90km from Darjeeling. The drive takes about 3 hours via the scenic routes of Mirik or Kurseong.
By rail: New Jalpaiguri (NJP) is the main railhead for the region, located 88km from Darjeeling. It connects to major Indian cities. From NJP, you can hire a taxi or take a shared jeep. The Darjeeling Himalayan Railway also connects NJP to Darjeeling, but it's a very slow, scenic journey, not a quick transfer.
By road: Siliguri is the main transport hub in the plains, 75km away. Shared jeeps and private taxis run regularly from Siliguri to Darjeeling and Kalimpong.
The best season to visit is from October to mid-June. The skies are generally clear during these months, offering the best mountain views. The monsoon arrives in late June and lasts until September, bringing heavy rain that can cause landslides on NH10 and the Pankhabari road, making travel difficult.
