The home is a good point from which to explore the Darjeeling hills. An early morning drive can take you to Tiger Hill, about 11km from Darjeeling town, to see the first light hit the Kanchenjunga massif.
For a closer look at the region's main industry, you can visit working tea gardens like Happy Valley or Glenburn tea estates for guided tours and tastings.
The Darjeeling Himalayan Railway, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, offers a two-hour 'joyride' on the toy train. The most popular route is the Ghum loop, which offers scenic views of the hills and town.
For serious trekkers, the Singalila ridge trek starts from nearby. The trail to Sandakphu offers a rare view of five of the world's highest peaks on a clear day: Everest, Lhotse, Makalu, Kanchenjunga, and Kabru.
In Darjeeling town, you can visit the Padmaja Naidu Himalayan Zoological Park, known for its red panda and snow leopard conservation programs. It shares a campus with the Himalayan Mountaineering Institute, founded by Tenzing Norgay after his Everest ascent.
By air: The nearest airport is Bagdogra (IXB), about 90km away. The drive up to the Darjeeling region takes around 3 hours via the roads through Mirik or Kurseong.
By rail: New Jalpaiguri (NJP) is the main railhead for the region, located 88km from Darjeeling. It connects to major Indian cities. From NJP, you can hire a car for the drive up. The Darjeeling Himalayan Railway also connects to Darjeeling, but it is a slow, scenic heritage line, not a fast transfer option.
By road: Siliguri, 75km away, is the main transport hub in the plains. From here, you can find shared jeeps or private cars to Darjeeling, Kalimpong, and Mirik.
The best time to visit is from October to mid-June, when the skies are generally clear and the weather is pleasant. This is the ideal window for mountain views and trekking. The monsoon season, from late June to September, brings heavy rain, which can cause landslides and road closures on the main highways like NH10 and the Pankhabari road.
