The home is a good starting point for exploring the Darjeeling hills. A pre-dawn drive takes you to Tiger Hill, about 11km away, to see the first light hit the peak of Kanchenjunga. For a taste of the region's most famous export, visit working tea gardens like Happy Valley or Glenburn for a tour and tasting session.
The Darjeeling Himalayan Railway, a UNESCO World Heritage site, offers a two-hour joyride on its toy train. The Ghum loop is a popular circuit. For serious trekkers, the Singalila ridge trek starts from nearby. The trail to Sandakphu offers a rare view of five of the world's highest peaks: Everest, Lhotse, Makalu, Kanchenjunga, and Kabru.
Back in town, the Padmaja Naidu Himalayan Zoological Park is known for its red panda conservation program. It shares a campus with the Himalayan Mountaineering Institute, which was once the home of Tenzing Norgay.
By air: The nearest airport is Bagdogra (IXB), around 90km from Darjeeling. The drive up to the hills takes about 3 hours, via the scenic routes of Mirik or Kurseong.
By rail: New Jalpaiguri (NJP) is the main railhead for the region, located 88km away. From NJP, you can hire a private or shared taxi. The historic Darjeeling Himalayan Railway also connects to Darjeeling town, offering a slow but very scenic journey.
By road: Siliguri, 75km away, is the main transport hub in the plains. From here, shared jeeps and private taxis run frequently to Darjeeling, Kalimpong, and Mirik. Darjeeling town itself is the central hub for exploring the surrounding hill region.
The best time to visit is from October to mid-June, when the skies are generally clear and the views of the Himalayas are sharp. This is the peak season for tourism, trekking, and sightseeing. The monsoon arrives in late June and lasts until September. This period brings heavy rainfall, which can cause landslides on NH10 and the Pankhabari road, making travel difficult and sometimes risky.
