The home is a good starting point for exploring the Darjeeling region. A short walk gets you to a spot where cabs are easily available.
For the classic Darjeeling experience, a pre-dawn drive to Tiger Hill (11km from Darjeeling town) is essential. You'll see the first rays of sun hit the Kanchenjunga range, turning it from grey to gold.
Visit a working tea garden like Happy Valley or Glenburn. You can see the process from leaf to cup and join a tasting session.
The Darjeeling Himalayan Railway, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is worth it-do. The two-hour ‘joyride’ on the toy train from Darjeeling to Ghum and back is a slow, scenic loop through the hills and markets.
For serious trekkers, the Singalila ridge trek offers one of the world's great mountain panoramas. From Sandakphu, on a clear day, you can see five of the world's highest peaks: Everest, Lhotse, Makalu, Kanchenjunga, and Kabru.
In Darjeeling town, the Padmaja Naidu Himalayan Zoological Park is known for its red panda and snow leopard conservation programs. It shares a campus with the Himalayan Mountaineering Institute (HMI), founded by Tenzing Norgay after his Everest ascent.
By air: The nearest airport is Bagdogra (IXB), about 90km from Darjeeling. The drive up to the hills takes around 3 hours, via the scenic routes of Mirik or Kurseong.
By rail: New Jalpaiguri (NJP) is the main railhead for the region, located 88km from Darjeeling. It connects to major Indian cities. From NJP, you can hire a car or take a shared jeep. The Darjeeling Himalayan Railway also connects to NJP, but it's a very slow, scenic journey.
By road: Siliguri (75km away) is the main transport hub in the plains. From here, shared jeeps and private taxis are available for Darjeeling, Kalimpong, and Mirik.
The best time to visit is from October to mid-June. These months offer clear skies, pleasant weather, and the best chances for uninterrupted views of the Kanchenjunga range. The monsoon, from late June to September, brings heavy rain, fog, and the risk of landslides on the main highways like NH10 and the Pankhabari road.
