A 9-day journey through Vietnam's dramatic northern highlands. Trek through Sapa's terraced rice paddies with Hmong guides. Ride the Ha Giang Loop -- 350 km of the most spectacular mountain roads in Southeast Asia, along the Chinese border. Visit Ban Gioc, the largest waterfall in the region (300m wide, shared with China). End at Ninh Binh's karst landscape. This is not the standard Vietnam trip -- it requires flexibility and comfort with rough roads, but the reward is landscapes and cultural encounters that feel genuinely undiscovered.
BEST TIME: September-November (rice terraces golden, clear skies, cool temperatures). March-April also good. DIFFICULTY: Moderate. Some rough roads. Basic accommodation on the Ha Giang loop. Not luxury -- but spectacular. SAPA: Rice terraces are most dramatic Sep-Oct (golden harvest) or May-Jun (emerald green planting). Dec-Jan is cold but misty and atmospheric. HA GIANG LOOP: The 350-km motorbike route is Vietnam's most spectacular drive. We use Easy Riders (experienced local drivers on motorbikes -- you sit on the back). Safest and most enjoyable option. BAN GIOC: Remote. The largest waterfall in Southeast Asia -- 300m wide. Getting there is the hardest part, but worth every kilometre. FOOD: Northern highland cuisine -- thang co (hot pot), com lam (bamboo rice), local rice wine. Simpler than southern Vietnam but deeply authentic. MONEY: ATMs are scarce in Ha Giang and Ban Gioc areas. Withdraw enough VND in Hanoi or Sapa before heading north. WHAT TO PACK: Warm layers for Sapa (5-15C), rain jacket, dust mask for Ha Giang, comfortable riding clothes, sturdy shoes for trekking.
