The main reason to be here is to explore the surrounding Garo Hills. Your host, Desing, is a guide and can arrange all excursions.
Waari Chora is the star attraction. The name means 'deep river' in the Garo language. Getting there involves a rugged 4x4 jeep ride followed by a trek into a series of narrow, river-carved canyons. The journey is as much a part of the experience as the destination.
Jadesil Fish Sanctuary is another nearby spot. It’s a community-run sanctuary protecting a stretch of the river, where you can see fish in the clear waters. It’s a calmer outing, often combined with a trip to Waari Chora.
Nakama Cave offers a different kind of adventure. It’s a caving experience that takes you through tight passages and large chambers, a classic Meghalaya activity. Desing can guide you through it.
By Air: The nearest major airport is Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport in Guwahati (GAU), Assam. From Guwahati, it’s a long drive into the South Garo Hills, which can take the better part of a day. Shillong Airport (SHL) is closer but has limited flight connectivity.
By Rail: Guwahati Railway Station is the closest major railhead. From there, you will need to hire a car for the journey to the South Garo Hills. There is no rail connectivity in Meghalaya.
By Road: The journey is long and on winding roads. The last stretch to the village of Emangre can be rough. Your host can help arrange transport from a major town or meet you for the final leg of the journey.
The best time to visit is during the dry winter and spring months, from October to April. During this period, the weather is pleasant, and the rivers are calm and clear, which is ideal for trekking to places like Waari Chora. The monsoon season, from June to September, brings intense rainfall, making many trails and canyons inaccessible and dangerous.
