The home is a good starting point for exploring the Kangra valley. The main town of Dharamshala and the Tibetan settlement of McLeodganj are a short drive away.
In McLeodganj, you can visit the Tsuglagkhang complex, the official residence of the Dalai Lama. It’s a centre for Tibetan Buddhism and culture. Walk the circular path around the temple, spinning the prayer wheels as you go.
For walkers, the Triund trek is a popular day hike. It’s a four-hour walk up from McLeodganj, leading to a ridge with a direct view of the Dhauladhar mountain range. The path is well-marked, but it’s best to start early in the morning.
The town of Bir, about two hours away, is famous for paragliding. The takeoff point at Billing is considered one of the best in the world, and the peak season runs from October to November. You can book a tandem flight with an experienced pilot for a thirty-minute ride over the valley.
Getting there.
The nearest airport is Gaggal Airport (DHM) in Dharamshala, which has limited flights. The most reliable and well-connected airport is Chandigarh International Airport (IXC), which is a 5-6 hour drive away.
The closest major railhead is Pathankot, about 90 km away. From there, you can hire a taxi for the three-hour drive to Dharamshala. Chandigarh is also a major railway station with connections to all parts of India.
By road, Dharamshala is well-connected by bus and taxi services from Delhi, Chandigarh, and other parts of Himachal Pradesh.
Best time to visit.
The best time to visit is from March to June, when the weather is pleasant and the snow has melted from the higher passes. Another good window is from September to November, after the monsoon, when the skies are clear and the views are sharp.
The monsoon season, from July to August, brings heavy rain and the risk of landslides on the main highways. Winters, from December to February, are cold, with snowfall in the upper reaches of Dharamshala and McLeodganj.
