Anjuna’s famous Wednesday flea market and the Saturday night market are a short drive away, offering everything from clothes to spices. For a bit of history, the cathedrals of Old Goa are worth a visit, particularly the Basilica of Bom Jesus, which holds the remains of St. Francis Xavier.
During the monsoon and early winter, the Dudhsagar waterfalls are a popular day trip, about 60km from Panjim. For sunsets, head to the old Portuguese forts of Aguada or Reis Magos, which overlook the Mandovi river estuary. A half-day trip to the spice plantations near Ponda, like Sahakari or Tropical, usually includes a guided tour and a traditional Goan lunch.
By air: North Goa is served by two airports. Manohar International Airport (GOX) at Mopa is the newest and closest. Dabolim Airport (GOI) in South Goa is the other option. By rail: Thivim (THVM) is the nearest major railway station for North Goa, well-connected on the Konkan Railway line. Madgaon (MAO) is the main hub for South Goa. By road: Mapusa is the nearest town and transport hub, known for its large Friday market. The state capital, Panjim, is a short drive away.
The cool, dry season from October to mid-March is the most popular time to visit. The skies are clear and all the beach shacks and seasonal restaurants are open. The monsoon, from June to September, is a different experience. The landscape turns a dramatic green, the clouds are heavy, and rates are often lower. While many beach shacks close, it’s a beautiful time to see a quieter side of Goa.
