The living root bridges are a worth seeing. The most famous, the double-decker bridge in Nongriat, is a challenging but rewarding trek involving a descent of over 3,500 steps. It’s a full-day trip.
This region is cave country. The Mawsmai and Krem Phyllut caves near Cherrapunji (Sohra) offer a glimpse into the limestone formations underground. Mawsmai is well-lit and accessible for most visitors, while others require a guide and a bit more adventure.
Nohkalikai Falls, India's tallest plunge waterfall, is a powerful sight, especially during or just after the monsoon. It's located near Cherrapunji, about a two-hour drive away.
The village of Mawlynnong, once named Asia's cleanest village, is a unique community-led initiative. Nearby, the Riwai sky walk offers views over the plains of Bangladesh from a bamboo platform.
Further afield is the Umngot river at Dawki, on the border with Bangladesh. Between January and March, the water runs so clear it looks like boats are floating on air.

The best time to visit for clear skies and pleasant weather is from October to April. This is the ideal season for trekking to the root bridges and exploring caves.
The monsoon, from June to September, is a different experience altogether. Mawsynram receives over 10,000mm of rain, transforming the landscape into an intensely green, mist-covered world. While some caves and trails may close due to the water levels, the waterfalls are at their most spectacular.
