This stay is primarily a base for those on the Char Dham yatra, specifically for Kedarnath. The main attraction is its proximity to the spiritual circuit.
Tungnath and Chandrashila: About a 2-3 hour drive away is Chopta, the base for the trek to Tungnath, the highest Shiva temple in the world. It's a steady 4-hour climb through rhododendron forests. The summit at Chandrashila offers a 360-degree view of the high Himalayan peaks, including Nanda Devi, Trishul, and Chaukhamba.
Ganga Aarti in Rishikesh: Most journeys into Garhwal begin or end in Rishikesh. The evening Ganga Aarti at Triveni Ghat or Parmarth Niketan is a powerful experience. Rishikesh is the main road hub from which you drive up to Phata.
By Air: The nearest airport is Jolly Grant Airport (DED) in Dehradun, which serves the Garhwal region. From the airport, you will need to hire a taxi for the multi-hour drive up to Phata.
By Rail: The closest major railhead is in Haridwar (HW). From Haridwar, you can find taxis and buses heading towards the upper Garhwal region. Rishikesh also has a railway station with limited connectivity.
By Road: Rishikesh is the primary road hub for the Garhwal region. Phata is on the main road to Kedarnath. The drive from Rishikesh is long and winding, passing through towns like Devprayag, Rudraprayag, and Guptkashi.
The best seasons are from March to June and again from September to November, when the skies are generally clear and the weather is pleasant. This window aligns with the Char Dham yatra season (typically May to October), which is the busiest time in this region.
The monsoon months of July and August see heavy rainfall, which can cause landslides and road closures. The high-altitude passes and temples, including Kedarnath, close during the peak winter months (December to February) due to heavy snowfall.
