Lansdowne is a quiet cantonment town, a good point from which to explore the lower Garhwal region.
A drive of about 50 km takes you to the Kotdwar entrance of Jim Corbett National Park, open from October to June for a chance to see tigers and other wildlife. For a different kind of energy, the spiritual hub of Rishikesh is a few hours away. You can witness the Ganga Aarti at Triveni Ghat or Parmarth Niketan, a powerful ceremony of lamps and chants held every evening on the banks of the river.
For those willing to drive further, the region is the gateway to high-altitude treks. The trailheads for Tungnath, the world's highest Shiva temple, and the UNESCO-listed Valley of Flowers are a day's drive away and are best attempted with an overnight stay.
The closest airport is Jolly Grant Airport in Dehradun (DED), the main air hub for the Garhwal region. The nearest major railhead is Haridwar (HW). From either Dehradun or Haridwar, it is a 3-4 hour taxi ride to Lansdowne. Rishikesh serves as the main road hub for the area.
The clearest skies are from March to June and again from September to November, making these months ideal for views and pleasant weather. The monsoon arrives in July and August, bringing lush greenery but also the risk of landslides on mountain roads. Higher altitude destinations like Auli and Chopta are often inaccessible from December to February due to heavy snowfall, but Lansdowne itself remains open year-round.
