Jispa is a key stop in the Lahaul valley, a high-altitude cold desert that opens up after the Atal Tunnel. The landscape here is the main draw.
The Atal Tunnel itself is an engineering marvel. The 9km tunnel bypasses the treacherous Rohtang Pass, providing year-round access between Manali and the Lahaul-Spiti district. The drive through is an experience, emerging into a completely different world of stark, beautiful mountains.
For the adventurous, Jispa is a common halt on the Spiti loop, a classic Himalayan road trip circuit that covers Kaza, the iconic Ki Monastery, and high-altitude villages like Kibber. This route is typically only open from June to October. Note that a permit is required for Indian nationals to cross the checkpost at Sumdo when completing the loop via Kinnaur.
Closer to Manali, on the way to or from Jispa, is the Solang Valley. It’s a hub for adventure sports, depending on the season.
The approach to Lahaul is a journey in itself. Expect slow travel, as most hill roads are single-lane with hairpin bends. A 100km drive can easily take 4-6 hours.
By Air: The nearest airport in the hills is Bhuntar Airport (KUU) in Kullu-Manali. However, flights are limited and weather-dependent. The most reliable and largest airport is Chandigarh (IXC) in the plains, from where you can hire a taxi for the multi-day drive.
By Rail: The nearest major railhead is Chandigarh (CDG). From there, you will need to continue by road.
By Road: Manali is the main gateway to the Lahaul valley. From Manali, you drive through the Atal Tunnel to reach Jispa. This route is now open for most of the year, weather permitting.
The best seasons to visit are from March to June, as the snow melts and summer arrives, and again from September to November, when the skies are clear after the monsoon.
The monsoon months of July and August are best avoided, as heavy rains can cause landslides on the national highways (NH-3 and NH-21) leading to the region. From December to February, the upper reaches of Himachal, including the approach to Lahaul, see heavy snowfall.
